The Rodiya: Outcaste People of Sri Lanka

Moments from a Rodiya village day. Above, a bird in a delicate tree appeared frozen against the mild dawn sky. At top right, women made the first of many trips to the village well. At lower right, a Rodiya man and his son, who was eating a pancake-like "hopper" from a high-caste tea shop. Changing attitudes now permit the outcaste Rodiya to enter such shops; formerly they could not. From the Minneapolis Tribune Picture Magazine, November 6, 1977, page 20. Photo: Clara NiiSka.
