    "From Swan, Anna Whitefisher, half sister of Chief Wah-bon-ah-quod: 'When Anna Whitefisher Swan had been married about two years, this band of Indians were moved from Gull Lake to White Earth.  They were moved by Chief Wah-bon-ah-quot, their leader, and the Government wanted them to move from their present home because the land around White Earth was good farm land and the Government wanted them to farm.  They were moved in the year of 1868 from Gull Lake, their past home, to White Earth.  There were about two hundred people moved at this time.  All their belongings and possessions were loaded. ... Chiefs of the Mississippi band of Indians around White Earth, Minnesota."

    "John's father, Donald McDonald was noted as one of two white men between Ft. Garry (Winnipeg) and St. Paul in 1845.  He lived at Crow Wing opposite the mouth of the Crow Wing River and was instrumental in opening the Woods Trail, part of the Red River ox cart trail.  Earlier McDonald was a liquor dealer.  He received a license from St. Croix County in 1842.  He had started to take a homestead on the site of what is now St. Paul, but moved away and settled in Crow Wing.  In 1854 he built a log house on the northeast shore of Detroit Lake in Becker County, stayed two years trading then returned to Otter Tail.  His wife, Genevieve Contois, was half Chippewa."
