KFAI's Indian
Uprising for May 15th
Guest is Cris Stainbrook (Lakota), President of the Indian Land Tenure
Foundation located in Little Canada, Minnesota. The mission of the
Foundation is to ensure that "land within the original boundaries of
every reservation and other areas of high significance where tribes
retain aboriginal interest are in Indian ownership and management."
American Indians face issues of checkerboard reservations,
fractionation of land and diminishment of land. Within the Upper
Great
Plains and Pacific Northwest states, there are 15.7 million acres of
tribal and individual Indian trust land. This is down 81 percent
from
the original treaty acreage of 81.3 million acres. Opportunity to
utilize the land base as an economic engine has been greatly diminished.
The ILTF is having a world premiere showing of their documentary, American
Indian Homelands,
hosted and narrated by Sam Donaldson, a thirty year broadcast
journalist for ABC. This fund raising event is being held at the
Minnesota History Center, St. Paul, on May 19th. VIP reception is
at
6:00 p.m. Meet Donaldson and film participants at the buffet.
Public
reception is at 6:30. Film showing at 7:45. There is limited
seating.
Deadline to reserve and purchase tickets is May 16th. Call
651-766-8999 or go online at www.indianlandtenure.org and click Events.
